The Magic Kingdom IS Disney for many people. Despite newer and larger parks, the Magic Kingdom still attracts more visitors than any other park. Opened in 1971, the Magic Kingdom has kept it's iconic status as the very essence of a dream theme park.
Despite changing cultures and a very different world from that envisaged by the late Walt Disney, people still flock to the Magic Kingdom for a fun day out.
The park itself is split into five lands arranged in a hub and spoke formation around the top of Main Street just in front of Cinderella Castle. The lands are called Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Liberty Square and Adventureland. Each land has its own theming rules ensuring for example that buzz lightyear is only seen in Tomorrowland never Frontierland.
The designers of the Magic Kingdom had a problem, how would they get cast members in various costumes to the right part of the park without them being out of character on the way through the other lands? The answer was a vast undergound complex of tunnels connecting all sections of the park. These tunnels, called Utilidors, still exist forming an undergound city beneath the magic Kingdom even though cast members can now walk freely through the park whatever outfit they're wearing.
Not everything has changed though, the Magic Kingdom is still completely alcohol free and the park still has plenty to offer all age groups. Some of the very earliest and most historically important rides can be found here such as the Carousell of Progress.
It may look as if you could completely cover this park in a day but with queues of over 90minutes at busy times for popular rides, you may come away frustrated by such a plan.
