MANATEE RESCUE
SeaWorld Florida is host to dozens of injured manatees each year. A Rescue and Rehabilitation Team brings back manatees to be treated and cared for before returning them to the wild. These gentle giants weigh up to 1,000lbs and spend most of their day sleeping or swimming along the sea bed. Unfortunately, boats and other water craft collide with them, especially in shallow waters. You may see scarring on the backs of these mammals caused by boat propeller blades.

manateeHere, you'll find them in a lush lagoon. There are numerous displays showing information about manatees and their plight.

An ideal place to learn about the conservation work that SeaWorld is involved in. The Manatees here have all been rescued by the park and often the exhibit serves as a half way house as these amazing sea cows receive care before being released back into the wild.

With just 2,400 manatees left in Florida waters, SeaWorld Orlando, has taken an active role in developing a solution to the crisis. Its manatee rescue, rehabilitation and release programme has recovered 243 animals since it was set up in 1976. SeaWorld is the leading facility in Florida authorised to rescue, care for and release the endangered animals.

Rescuing and caring for the manatees has enabled SeaWorld to develop some innovative solutions to aid the increasing number of orphaned manatee calves. It has pioneered treatment techniques including ultrasound, anaesthesia, X-rays, surgery and thermography. It has even developed a special `manatee baby formula' which is adapted to each calf's needs.

The manatee rescue, rehabilitation and release programme is part of SeaWorld's renowned animal rescue team. The team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In the last five years alone, the team has rescued more than 3,000 injured, orphaned or stranded marine animals. Veterinarians and animal care specialists are available to treat the creatures and those that are successfully rehabilitated and medically fit will be released back into their natural habitat.
