| ESTA fee applies from next month |
From September 9th the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) that needs to be completed by UK visitors to the USA will no longer be free. The US government will be charging $14 (£9) for each ESTA completed. The ESTA lasts for two years but for those who apply before September 9th will only have to pay once their current one expires. The ESTA replaces the green visa waiver form which passengers have previously filled in on their flight into the US. The new system was introduced in January 2009 and made compulsory from January 2010. The ESTA form takes up to 72 hours to be approved so should be completed several days before travel at the latest. US officials have stated the fee will be used to help promote US tourism. |
